HIGHLIGHTS

  • Shreyas Iyer was dismissed for an 11-ball duck in warm-up fixture
  • India are off to a horror start after captain Rohit Sharma won the toss
  • Prasidh Krishna and Rishabh Pant combined to remove Shreyas Iyer

India batter Shreyas Iyer failed in his first innings on the England tour as Prasidh Krishna dismissed him for an 11-ball duck in India’s warm-up fixture against Leicester on Thursday. Shreyas Iyer came out to bat at No.5 after Hanuma Vihari’s dismissal when India’s score read 54 for 3. India are off to a horror start after captain Rohit Sharma won the toss against Leicestershire and opted to bat first in the four-day warm- up match.

Indian superstars Cheteshwar Pujara, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, and Prasidh Krishna are part of the Leicestershire squad, captained by opening batsman Sam Evans. The LCCC, BCCI, and the ECB have all agreed to allow the four players from the visiting camp to be part of the team to allow all members of the touring side to participate in the fixture (subject to fitness). The match is taking place with 13 players per side to provide further flexibility and help manage bowling workloads.

Iyer is being considered a mainstay in the Indian Test team after his match-saving contributions in the Sri Lanka series, and he would hope to fix a place for himself in the middle order where the competition is tough. The likes of Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya, among others, make the position intensely competitive, but Iyer’s spin playing capability gives him a head start.
