Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler have backed Eoin Morgan to come good and reckoned that the southpaw will be back to his very best going forward.
On Wednesday, June 22, England handed Netherlands a 3-0 defeat with an eight-wicket victory in the third and final match of their ODI series at the VRA Ground in Amstelveen.
The left-handed Morgan had a torrid time in the series after scoring two back-to-back ducks. He missed the third match due to a groin injury and Buttler led the Three Lions.
It’s almost been a year since the 35-year-old batter scored a half-century in limited-overs cricket for the Brits. His poor run of form has also raised questions about his selection for the T20 World Cup later this year in Australia.
“Well, he’s only had two low scores so I wouldn’t say he’s going through a hard time at the moment,” England Test captain Stokes was quoted as saying to the reporters.
“I think the press are the only ones giving him a hard time and I think the players have shown it’s not an issue with them.
“People are allowed to not score many runs and more than that, he’s our captain. He’s a phenomenal leader and always will be, so I’ve got no issues with anything going on with him at the moment,” Stokes added.
Buttler, who scored an unbeaten 86 on Wednesday, said that one shouldn’t question Morgan’s place in the England camp.
“I can’t put into words what he’s achieved. Everyone always talks about his captaincy, but you forget what a brilliant batsman he’s been for England in over 200 ODIs – that doesn’t just go away overnight. Everyone in the team is backing him,” Buttler said.
